In an era marked by devastating global conflicts, senseless gun violence, persistent racism, deepening class divisions, and toxic political polarization, we find ourselves at a crossroads where the very institutions meant to unite us, including sports, have often become complicit in perpetuating the divisions that tear at our social fabric. The sports world, once envisioned as a sacred space where merit transcends background and universal values are celebrated, has too frequently devolved into a platform for performative patriotism and polarizing spectacle. While we recognize the well-intentioned efforts of leagues like NASCAR, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS, and NWSL to provide platforms for meaningful expression against societal injustices, we lament how the romanticized ideal of sports as an equalizing force has been overshadowed by billion-dollar enterprises that often choose profit and political expedience over principle.
Yet from this opportunity, we draw clarity about what we truly believe: that genuine patriotism is found not in blind allegiance or nationalist pageantry, but in the courageous work of building a more just and inclusive society. We believe in spiritual disciplines that call us toward compassion rather than conquest, toward justice rather than supremacy, and toward unity that celebrates diversity rather than demanding conformity. True love of country manifests in holding it accountable to its highest ideals, not in silencing those who dare to point out where it falls short. We believe sports can and should transcend the poisonous politics of division, serving instead as a laboratory for the kind of world we wish to build—one where character matters more than pedigree, where effort is rewarded regardless of origin, and where the content of one’s character truly does matter more than any superficial distinction.
Therefore, we commit ourselves to maintaining equilibrium in turbulent times, doing our best to stand as a beacon of integrity and accountability for those who depend on us to deliver truth and goodness. We will cover sports through the lens of its transcendent power to unite rather than divide, refusing to amplify the negative energy that flows from exclusionary nationalism or divisive rhetoric. In a world increasingly defined by what we’re against, we choose to define ourselves by what we’re for: justice, compassion, truth, your ability to be your best self, and the radical belief that every human being possesses inherent dignity worthy of respect and protection. We unequivocally condemn all acts that sow discord and violence in our communities and on the international stage—from the unconscionable tragedies of gang violence and mass school shootings to the assassination of political figures regardless of affiliation, from homicidal violence stemming from personal disputes over differing perspectives to any unwarranted taking of human life. As a society, we must mature in our capacity to disagree better, finding ways to engage our deepest differences with civility, respect, and an unwavering commitment to resolving conflict through dialogue rather than destruction.
I close with this: our thoughts and heart are with those who have lost loved ones tragically, quietly, and publicly. “No matter how long the night is, the morning is sure to come.” Life inevitably brings moments of profound sadness and anger, yet this ancient wisdom reminds us that no situation, however terrible, is permanent. Each new dawn carries the promise of possibility and renewal. In our darkest hours, we can find solace knowing that morning—and hope—will always return. May those lost rest forever in the arms of the Almighty. Be well.
