Former Penn State Defensive Star Abdul Carter Avoids Foot Surgery For Now

Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter, a potential No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has opted against surgery for a stress reaction in his right foot after additional scans and consultations with doctors.

Timeline of Events Carter was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot on February 26, 2025, during medical exams at the NFL Scouting Combine. Initial opinions on whether surgery was necessary were mixed, with Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, noting that a decision would be made soon.

The two options considered were:

  • Pre-emptive surgery: Inserting a screw into the foot with an eight-week recovery time.
  • No surgery: Proceeding with Penn State’s pro day on March 28 to show NFL teams surgery is unnecessary.

After further scans and consultations on February 27, doctors advised against surgery. Carter will now focus on preparing for his pro day on March 28.

Impact on Draft Status Despite this setback, Rosenhaus remains confident in Carter’s draft prospects. “I couldn’t be more confident that this will be a non-factor where he’s drafted,” Rosenhaus stated. Carter’s stellar college career supports this optimism, with honors including Big Ten’s top defensive player in 2024, along with 39.5 tackles for loss, 23 sacks, and 14 passes defensed over three years.

Carter’s NFL Aspirations Before this medical update, Carter expressed his belief that he should be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. “I feel like I’m the best player in the country, and the best player should be selected No. 1,” Carter said at the NFL Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-3, 248-pound defender, who models his game after former Penn State star Micah Parsons, is confident he can be equally dominant in the NFL.

A former teammate of mine at UNC, Dwight Hollier, faced a similar dilemma and opted for the screw. He went on to play with the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts in the NFL. We wish Abdul well in his decision to move forward without the surgery, as every situation can have slight differences.
