Packed House Sports Grieves The Loss Of A Legend, Coach Bill McCartney, At Age 84

Coach Bill McCartney is a former American football coach best known for his tenure as head coach of the University of Colorado football team from 1982 to 1994. Under his leadership, the Buffaloes rose to national prominence, including winning a share of the 1990 National Championship. McCartney was also named the AP Coach of the Year that season.

Beyond football, McCartney is recognized for his deep Christian faith and as the founder of Promise Keepers, a Christian men’s organization aimed at promoting spiritual growth, accountability, and community among men. His leadership in both sports and faith-based initiatives has left a lasting impact, especially on our owner.

McCartney unfortunately died at 84 on Friday night “after a courageous journey with dementia,” covered in a family statement.

Packed House Sports & Owner Chuckie Burnette (who Colorado recruited during Coach McCartney’s tenure, and who had his son Mike as a coach at North Carolina) sends our deepest condolences to the family. Our thoughts and prayers are forever with the family. We are honored that Bill’s dear ones and his beloved Colorado Buffs allowed his heart and life to be shared with us!
