East Carolina University has made the difficult decision to part ways with head football coach Mike Houston after six seasons at the helm. The move comes on the heels of a disappointing 45-28 loss to Army, dropping ECU’s record to 3-4 for the 2024 season.
A Tenure of Ups and Downs
Houston’s time at ECU was marked by both promise and frustration. After taking over in 2018, he led the Pirates to their highest point in 2022 with an 8-5 record and a Birmingham Bowl victory. However, the team’s performance declined sharply thereafter, culminating in a last-place finish in the American Athletic Conference in 2023. This was unfortunate, as many were hopeful considering his coaching performance at James Madison, where Houston won an FCS national championship in 2016.
Factors Leading to the Decision
Several factors contributed to Houston’s dismissal:
- Recent struggles: The team’s 3-4 record this season, including losses to in-state rivals Appalachian State and Charlotte, highlighted ongoing difficulties.
- Overall record: Houston’s final record at ECU stands at 27-38, falling short of expectations.
- Failure to meet expectations: Despite consecutive bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022, the program failed to achieve sustained success.
Athletic director Jon Gilbert made the announcement Sunday, a day after the Pirates (3-4) lost to No. 23 Army 45-28. Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell will be interim coach for the remainder of the season.
“After earning back-to-back bowl invitations, we looked poised for continued success,” said Gilbert of bowl appearances in 2021-22. “Unfortunately, we have not seen the results we all want, and a change is needed to move the program forward.”
The Search Begins
Athletic Director Jon Gilbert emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “After achieving consecutive bowl game appearances, we believed we were on the path to sustained success. Regrettably, the outcomes have not met our expectations, and a shift is necessary to advance the program”.
The search for Houston’s replacement is expected to begin immediately. ECU will be looking for a candidate who can:
- Rebuild the program’s competitiveness
- Recapture the success seen under former coaches like Steve Logan and Ed Emory
- Energize the fan base and improve recruitment
Financial Implications
The decision to fire Houston comes with significant financial implications. If terminated without cause, ECU would be responsible for paying the remainder of his base salary, calculated at $1.4 million per year. This could amount to a substantial buyout, potentially in the millions of dollars.
Interim Leadership
Defensive coordinator Blake Harrell has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. This appointment allows for continuity while the search for a permanent replacement is conducted.
“We are confident we will identify the right leader for our football program. I believe ECU is a premier job with a passionate fan base, unprecedented support from our Pirate Club donors, and great facilities that continue to improve. Right now, we are focusing on our student-athletes as they compete for a postseason opportunity in the final five regular season games. My hope is Pirate Nation will rally around our student-athletes like they have always done.”

As ECU embarks on this new chapter, the pressure is on to find a leader who can restore the Pirates to their former respectability and compete at the highest levels of the American Athletic Conference.
