Sherrone Moore has official deal from Michigan Football

Sherrone Moore, the head football coach at the University of Michigan, has a new contract in place that reflects his role and performance.

Moore had been serving as the head coach of Michigan football since January without an official contract, including through the Wolverines’ first two games this season. On Wednesday, after nearly eight months of uncertainty and just days after Michigan’s disappointing 31-12 loss to Texas, the university finally finalized Moore’s contract. USA TODAY reported that Moore had been working under a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which provided a broad outline of his future contract, including a five-year deal worth $6 million annually plus bonuses, but lacked detailed legal terms for firing conditions.

Here are the details of his new contract:

Duration: The contract extends through the 2029 season.

Salary: Moore’s base salary is set at $6 million per year, with additional performance-based incentives.

Performance Bonuses: The contract includes incentives for achieving specific milestones, such as:

  • College Football Playoff Appearance: Up to $500,000
  • Big Ten Championship: Up to $250,000
  • National Championship: Up to $1 million

Retention Bonus: There is a retention bonus of $2 million if Moore remains with the program through the end of the contract.

Buyout Clause: If Moore chooses to leave the program before the end of the contract, he would owe a buyout amount. The buyout starts at $4 million and decreases by $500,000 each year after the third year of the contract.

Additional Perks: Moore’s contract includes standard perks such as use of a university car, a personal assistant, and membership to various clubs and facilities.

Recruiting Budget: An increase in the recruiting budget, which is part of the overall support provided for Moore to enhance the team’s competitive edge.

These details highlight Michigan’s commitment to Moore, recognizing his contributions and setting the stage for continued success under his leadership.

Sherrone Moore’s official hiring as Michigan’s head football coach is historically significant as he is the first African American to hold the position at the university. Promoted from within the program, Moore’s ascent reflects a commitment to continuity and cultural stability following Jim Harbaugh’s successful tenure. His contract, which includes a substantial salary and performance incentives, highlights the significant investment and high expectations Michigan has placed on his leadership. This appointment marks a notable moment in the program’s history and in the broader context of diversity in college football coaching.
