PERTH, Australia – January 1, 2025: The United States stormed into the semifinals of the United Cup on Wednesday, fueled by the remarkable efforts of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz. The duo carried the U.S. to a 3-0 triumph over China, keeping alive the hope of reclaiming the title they won two years ago.
In a thrilling opener, World No. 3 Gauff emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle against Zhang Shuai, securing a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win. Reflecting on the contest, Gauff praised her opponent’s relentless performance, stating, “Shuai was playing incredible tennis out there. I felt like I was on the defensive throughout the match. Her aggressive play forced me to take risks on my second serves, but ultimately, I found a way through.”

Taylor Fritz then took to the court with determination, knowing the pressure was on. He delivered a composed performance, defeating Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-4. “Coco did a fantastic job setting the pace, and I knew I had to maintain the momentum,” Fritz shared. “There was some pressure, but I’m delighted with how I played.”
The American team sealed their place in the semifinals when Desirae Krawczyk and Robert Galloway overcame Zhang and Sun Fajing in a tightly contested mixed doubles match, winning 6-3, 6-7 (1), 10-3. With their clean sweep, the U.S. now prepares to face either Italy or Czechia in the next round.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan advanced to the semifinals after a 2-1 victory over a German team missing World No. 2 Alexander Zverev, who withdrew due to a biceps injury. Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko clinched the deciding point after recovering from heat exhaustion, defeating Daniel Masur 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. “The heat was intense, and it was a tough match,” Shevchenko admitted. “But I’m proud of how I battled through.”
In Sydney, Poland secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a crucial mixed doubles win by Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz over Czechia. Swiatek and Hurkacz prevailed 7-6 (3), 6-3, ensuring Poland’s progression.
Britain also clinched a quarterfinal berth thanks to Katie Boulter’s commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Australia’s Olivia Gadecki. Despite Australia’s 2-1 win in the tie, it was not enough to advance.
Looking ahead, all eyes will be on Sydney as the remaining rounds of the United Cup unfold, culminating in the final on Sunday. With fierce competition from Italy, Poland, and Britain, the stage is set for an electrifying conclusion to this prestigious mixed-team event.
