Grayson McCall, the talented quarterback for North Carolina State University, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 23, following a series of concussions that culminated in a severe injury during a game against Wake Forest on October 5. This decision marks the end of a promising career that began at Coastal Carolina University, where McCall established himself as a record-setting player.
McCall’s journey in college football has been both illustrious and challenging. At Coastal Carolina, he amassed over 10,000 passing yards and earned the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year title for three consecutive years. His skill on the field was evident, with an impressive record of 88 touchdown passes and only 14 interceptions across 42 games.
However, the young quarterback’s career has been marred by recurring injuries, particularly concussions. The recent incident against Wake Forest, which saw McCall carted off the field and taken to a hospital, proved to be the final straw. In a heartfelt Instagram post, McCall explained, “As you all know I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from.”

The decision to retire was not taken lightly. McCall consulted with brain specialists and his family before concluding that continuing his football career would be too risky. His statement reflects a growing awareness in the sport about the long-term effects of concussions and the importance of prioritizing player health over athletic achievements.
McCall’s retirement highlights the ongoing conversation about player safety in football, especially concerning head injuries. It serves as a stark reminder of the physical toll the sport can take on athletes, even those at the peak of their college careers.
As McCall steps away from the game, he leaves behind a legacy of grit, talent, and accomplishment. His journey from Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail to becoming a star at Coastal Carolina, and finally to NC State, has been, in his words, “better than any dream I could’ve ever envisioned.”
The football community sulks a bit more today as another promising career is cut short due to health concerns, prompting continued discussions about how to make the sport safer for its players at all levels.
