Ballerina Michaela DePrince Now Soars With The Angels

We are still reflecting on a life gone too soon. Michaela DePrince, a remarkable ballerina whose life story inspired millions, tragically passed away at the age of 29. Born in war-torn Sierra Leone and orphaned at a young age, DePrince overcame incredible odds to become a celebrated dancer, breaking barriers in the world of ballet. Her journey from an orphanage, where she was labeled “the devil’s child” due to her vitiligo, to the stages of prestigious ballet companies around the world, captivated audiences and served as a ray of hope for aspiring dancers everywhere.

DePrince’s talent and determination led her to perform with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Dutch National Ballet, and the Boston Ballet. Her influence extended beyond the world of classical dance, as she collaborated with pop icons Beyoncé and Madonna, bringing ballet to broader audiences. As an ambassador for War Child, she used her platform to advocate for children affected by conflict, drawing from her own experiences. DePrince’s untimely passing leaves a void in the dance world, but her legacy as a trailblazer, inspiring young Black dancers and promoting diversity in ballet, will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Related to this story, Elaine DePrince, the adoptive mother of this renowned ballerina Michaela DePrince, tragically passed away on September 11, just one day after her 29-year-old daughter’s unexpected death. Elaine was 77 years old.

Here at Packed House Sports, we acknowledge the pain of these losses. We also recognize that ballet is a sport that requires physical exertion, discipline, and difficult skills, similar to other sports. Ballet is as difficult and hazardous as any other sport.

Our thoughts are with their loved ones, friends, and the millions Michaela inspired along the way.
