Carolina Blue Takes the World Stage at the 2024 Olympics

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris are just around the corner, and the University of North Carolina is represented by an impressive contingent of current and former student-athletes. With at least 12 Tar Heels set to compete, the Carolina blue spirit will be palpable in the City of Light. The University of North Carolina is proud to have the following student-athletes and alumni competing in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics:

Soccer Stars Shine Bright

The UNC women’s soccer team is well-represented, with Crystal Dunn (USA), UNC 2010-13, Emily Fox (USA), UNC 2017-19, and Katie Bowen (New Zealand), UNC 2012-15 vying for gold in the prestigious tournament. Dunn and Fox will don the stars and stripes for the United States, while Bowen will wear the pride of New Zealand.

Field Hockey Frenzy

In field hockey, Ashley Hoffman (USA), UNC 2015-18, Meredith Sholder (USA), UNC 2017-22, and Cassie Sumfest (USA, alternate), UNC 2017-21 will showcase their skills on the world stage, all representing the United States.

Global Talent on Display

The Tar Heel family’s reach extends far beyond the United States, with athletes competing for various countries:

  • Rinky Hijikata (Australia) in men’s tennis, UNC 2020-21 (singles)
  • Ethan Ramos (Puerto Rico), UNC 2013-18 (86kg freestyle) wrestling
  • Kristen Siermachesky (Canada), UNC 2021-22 in women’s rowing

Diving into the Spotlight

The UNC swimming and diving team boasts an impressive four representatives:

  • Aranza Vazquez Montaño (Mexico), a four-time NCAA champion, returns for her second Olympic attempt, UNC 2020-present (3M springboard diving)
  • Patrick Hussey (Canada), UNC 2020-present will compete in the (2x400m freestyle relay)
  • UNC Incoming freshmen Martin Kartavi (Israel) in the men’s 50-meter freestyle and Adam Maraana (Israel) in the men’s 100-meter backstroke
