2024 NFL Training Camps: Day 1 Recap (July 23, 2024)

Here’s a recap of the first day of the 2024 NFL Training Camps:

Chicago Bears: The Bears’ defense had a successful goal-line stand during the two-minute drill, showcasing their edge and conditioning level. Rookie defensive end Austin Booker recorded a pressure, and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds had pass break-ups.

Detroit Lions: Lions rookies reported on July 20, and veterans reported on July 23. The team is looking to build on their previous season’s performance.

Green Bay Packers: Rashan Gary had an impressive practice, recording three sacks in a four-play stretch during the final 11-on-11 period. He’s expected to thrive in the new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme.

Carolina Panthers: Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to win, despite their six straight losing seasons. He’s joined a team with a major concern at pass rush.

New York Jets: The Jets reported to training camp, with a focus on handling expectations and hype surrounding Aaron Rodgers. However, pass rusher Haason Reddick became a training-camp holdout on the first day. Reddick is due $14.25M in the final year of his deal after the Jets traded for him in March. Reddick is subject to $50,000-per-day fines for each absence.

Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson missed his third straight day of camp due to illness, and backup quarterback Josh Johnson faced constant pressure from outside linebacker Odafe Oweh. Nonetheless, Johnson is impressing with his poise and precision.

Tennessee Titans: General manager Ran Carthon hinted at possibly extending wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ contract, praising his contributions to the team.

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs are exploring Kadarius Toney’s versatility, using him as a running back in addition to wide receiver. Coach Andy Reid highlighted Toney’s strengths in moving around and working with the running backs. Kyle Sheets’ signing: The Chiefs signed former Slippery Rock University wide receiver Kyle Sheets, who began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent for the New Orleans Saints. Kamal Hadden’s recovery: Cornerback Kamal Hadden, a sixth-round pick in April, has recovered from a shoulder injury and is training with Nic Jones. Practice schedule: The Chiefs’ training camp practices are free of charge to the public unless otherwise noted, and all practice sessions will take place on the Mosaic Training Fields.

Las Vegas Raiders: Coach Antonio Pierce stated that there’s no leader yet in the quarterback battle between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew. The team will utilize preseason games to determine the starter.

Miami Dolphins: The FINS Re-Sign Veteran Edge Defender Emmanuel Ogbah. In a swift move to bolster their pass rush, the Miami Dolphins signed free-agent edge defender on Tuesday morning. This signing comes just three days after the sudden retirement of Shaquil Barrett, a key member of the team’s defensive line. Ogbah, a familiar face in Miami, returns to the Dolphins after previously spending four seasons with the team, during which he accumulated an impressive 24.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. His return provides a much-needed boost to the Dolphins’ defensive edge.

Jacksonville Jaguars: CB Tyson Campbell is signing a 4-year, $76.5M extension that includes $53.4M effectively guaranteed on Tuesday. He’s the latest player to receive a big contract from the team in what has been a busy offseason. The deal will make him the seventh-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Funky stat: He’s the highest-paid CB yet to be named to a Pro Bowl in a deal negotiated by Todd France and Kyle McCarthy of AthletesFirst.

New England Patriots: Here’s an astute take on the Patriots’ QB competition: Patriots HC Jerod Mayo’s candid assessment of the QB competition reveals a clear pecking order, with Jacoby Brissett emerging as the most pro-ready option. While Mayo didn’t entirely rule out rookie Will Maye’s chances, it’s evident that the team is prioritizing his development over immediate playing time. Maye’s impressive arm talent is undeniable, but his raw skills require refinement, particularly in ball placement and decision-making. By letting him marinate in the system and hone his craft, the Patriots are taking a prudent approach, ensuring Maye’s future success rather than rushing him into action prematurely.

Atlanta Falcons: In a thrilling turn of events, the Atlanta Falcons’ offense is poised to become one of the most transformed and improved in the league this season, thanks to the savvy addition of quarterback Kirk Cousins and a revamped coaching staff. While all eyes will undoubtedly be on the likes of Cousins, Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Michael Penix Jr. as they take to the training camp field, there’s a sleeper talent lurking in the shadows – Rondale Moore. Despite a concerning downward trend in his PFF grades over the past three years, Moore is still only 24 and has been given a fresh lease on life after a perplexing stint in Arizona. Now, he’s set to join forces with Darnell Mooney in the slot, a position that played a pivotal role in Robinson’s offense during his time in Los Angeles, and could be the key to unlocking Moore’s true potential in this new-look Falcons offense.
