The Atlanta Braves have acquired outfielder Jorge Soler and right-handed reliever Luke Jackson from the San Francisco Giants in a trade that sends left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek and minor league third baseman Sabin Ceballos to San Francisco. This move reunites Soler and Jackson with the Braves’ 2021 World Series-winning team.
The Giants, despite their recent success, are shedding salary by trading Soler, who has a notable power hitting record, including the longest home run of the season at 478 feet. Soler is expected to play in the outfield for the Braves, who have faced injuries to key players like Ronald Acuña Jr. and pitcher Spencer Strider. Jackson, who has performed well in July, adds depth to the Braves’ strong bullpen. The Giants may look to make further trades, with reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell as a potential candidate, though his high salary and trade conditions complicate matters.
I super excited! It feels like 2021 all over again.
Soler, 32, is having another solid offensive season, posting a .240/.330/.419 line and a 116 wRC+ over 93 games with the Giants. In the past month, he has been among the top hitters in the National League, boasting a .292/.400/.528 line.
Soler’s performance was even stronger in 2023, when he recorded a 126 wRC+ and hit 36 home runs with the Marlins. He is expected to provide a significant lift to a lineup that has struggled since late April.
The Braves officially announced the deal late Monday night.
